It is unknown when was he born. His parents are also unknown. He was a successor of Ruler C.
In 608 this ruler inaugurated the "niche" stela type that became characteristic at Piedras Negras for the next century and a half.[2] The rectangular "niche" in which K'inich Yo'nal Ahk had himself depicted on the occasion of his accession in 603 actually consisted of the sides and roof of a canopy atop a scaffold.
A second influential stela type introduced by K'inich Yo'nal Ahk portrayed him as a "warrior king".[3]
He died on February 3, 639. His death and the dedication of his mortuary temple in 658 were recorded on Panel 4 by his son and successor Itsamk'anahk II.
Wife of K'inich Yo'nal Ahk I was Lady Bird Headdress. They were parents of his successor. They were also grandparents of the king K'inich Yo'nal Ahk II.[4]
